During this Christmas season, we reflect on several visitations.

1) The angel that was sent to Zacharias to tell him that he and his wife Elizabeth will have a child, even though they are old and his name shall be John.

2) The angel that was sent to Mary.  “The angel said, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35)   Her reply is awesome, “Then Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.” (Luke 1:38)  Wow, “be it unto me according to your word!”  That is really trusting God!  Imagine being told what Mary just heard!  Pregnant, by the Holy Spirit, before marriage and the baby is going to be the Son of God!  Then look at the next two verses, “At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth.”  Notice that she didn’t go and tell Joseph, the man she was engaged to, the news that she would have a child, by the Holy Spirit, not by him.  Instead, she went to see her aunt Elizabeth.

3) The third visitation was to Joseph and you don’t really hear very much about that.  When Joseph did find out that Mary was pregnant, this is what the Bible says, “Joseph, her fiance, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.” (Matt 1:19)  What a great man!  He could have had her stoned!

“As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit.”  (Matt 1:20)  There is something in this verse that my husband picked up on that I had never noticed.  Joseph went to sleep!  It would be hard to go to sleep if he was anxious!  No tossing and turning, awake all night long!   Joseph went to sleep and the angel came to him in a dream!  “When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.”  (Matt 1:24)

God had the perfect mother AND father for Jesus

Many blessings this wonderful time of year!
Merry Christmas!
